Oral Surgery Preparation at Gallery Park Dental in Glenview IL

Oral surgery can be nerve-wracking, especially if you've never experienced it before. However, being prepared is a great way to ease your worries, and to ensure that your procedure goes well! Of course every patient is different, and your dentist will consult you on any specifics for how you should prepare for your unique surgery. Still, we have some tips that may help you get ready:

  • Transportation: It's common for patients to need a driver to take them home after oral surgery, as the effects of the anesthetic may not have worn off. Be sure to arrange a friend or family, or a service, to help you get home after your treatment.
  • Dietary restrictions: Your dentist will go over any restrictions in your diet that you will have to follow post-surgery. Since you'll be recovering at home typically, you'll want to be sure to pick up some foods that fit your needs ahead of time. Typically these restrictions last the duration of your healing time, which depends on your unique procedure.
  • Recovery: Preparing ahead of time for your recovery can make it much easier. Depending on your procedure, you may have to spend some time in bed waiting on the anesthetics to wear off, so make sure you've got a comfortable spot at home to rest. You can also ask your dentist to prescribe any post-treatment medications ahead of time so that you can have them filled and ready to go.
  • Fasting: Due to the drugs used for surgery, your dentist may have you fast for a certain number of hours before the surgery. This typically includes drinking as well. If you think this may be difficult, consider scheduling your surgery for early in the morning so you can sleep through most of the fasting period before your procedure.
