Did you know that around 20% of Americans suffer from some form of dental fear or anxiety? A lot of the time this is caused by a bad dental experience they had as a child. At Gallery Park Dental, your premiere kid's dentist in Glenview, we understand how critical those first visits are for your child, and we strive to make them as pleasant and upbeat as possible. Here are some other ways to help your child overcome dental anxiety.
Lead By Example
When your child sees you brushing and flossing your teeth, they will want to do the same. You can make home care fun for them, especially as they get older with timers and fun brushes and toothpaste. We also encourage parents to bring their little ones with them to their own dental appointments. This lets your child become familiar with the dental office and what happens during your appointment. They can see that it's not scary.
When Should My Child's First Dental Visit Be?
Our doctors like to see children when their first teeth arrive, or no later than one year old. Did you know you should begin brushing their teeth as soon as they arrive? These first visits will be spent examining and counting their teeth, and really just getting them comfortable in "the big chair." We'll only move forward with procedures as your child gets older and more comfortable at our office. Early appointments allow us to monitor their dental development and make you aware of any concerns early on.
For our patients who need a little extra help relaxing during their procedures, we offer nitrous oxide, or laughing gas to help "take the edge off." Nitrous is a breathable gas administered through a mask, and it's also safe for children. Nitrous work quickly to help your child relax, but also leaves their system quickly so they can participate in normal activities after their dental appointment. We're happy to discuss using nitrous for your child if necessary.
At Gallery Park Dental, we look forward to building a life-long relationship with you and your child! Contact our office today to schedule their next appointment.
