While many people still prefer manual toothbrushes, the use of electric toothbrushes are becoming more and more common. Many patients have questions about the benefits of an electric toothbrush and wonder if switching over from manual to electric is the right decision for them. This article will provide general information about the electric toothbrush accompanied with the benefits that an electric toothbrush can provide.

Benefits of an Electric Toothbrush

1. Electric toothbrushes clean your teeth more thoroughly with less effort.

Of course it is possible to keep your teeth clean with a manual toothbrush; however, many find it easier to stay on top of cleaning with an electric toothbrush. The electronic toothbrush has rotating bristles that can easily remove plaque and tartar from hard to reach areas that can be forgotten about when using a manual toothbrush.

2. Electric toothbrushes apply equal pressure to all areas of the teeth and gums.

Many people have trouble maintaining equal pressure throughout their mouth with a manual toothbrush. Although we try to brush evenly, many times we favor one side of our mouth over the other, which can mean certain areas of our teeth have plaque and tartar buildup that collect over time and can lead to later problems. Electric toothbrushes can make brushing evenly easier for many—especially children. The pressure and rotation of the bristles remain consistent throughout the duration of brushing, and many electric brushes let you know when it is time to switch sides or quadrants.

3. Less work!

Dentists recommend that the average person spends two minutes brushing their teeth, twice a day. This does not seem like a lot of time; however, many people do not dedicate the correct amount of time necessary to brushing their teeth. An electric toothbrush can make this process easier and requires less effort on the part of the patient. Additionally, many electric toothbrushes let you know when enough time has passed so you can safely stop brushing and know that you have spent enough time on each quadrant.

If these benefits seem both helpful and beneficial to you, perhaps it’s time to consider switching from a manual toothbrush to an electric model.

Choosing a Toothbrush

There are so many brands and models of electric toothbrushes to choose from and picking the right one can seem overwhelming. Most electric toothbrushes are capable of providing the benefits listed above.
