When Do You Need Oral Surgery?
At Gallery Park Dental, our goal is to help you preserve and maintain your natural teeth for a lifetime.
There are, however, certain circumstances that may arise that could make tooth extraction the best option. If you find yourself needing a tooth extraction, Dr. Drew Gripentrog and Dr. Jason Rogers want you to know that you're in good hands. We'll talk here about what you can expect when you need oral surgery in Glenview.
Otherwise known as third molars, wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to arrive, usually around the ages of 18 to 25. They come in at the back of your mouth behind your first two molars. Because they're so far back in your mouth, they're often hard to keep clean. If you can't properly brush and floss your wisdom teeth, you'll increase your risk for developing certain issues such as tooth decay and gum disease. For this reason, we typically recommend that your wisdom teeth be removed.
Another important reason to remove wisdom teeth is that if they remain impacted, or stuck below the gum line, they can cause an infection. Plus, if they don't erupt, or come in properly, they can cause crowding or shifting of your other healthy teeth.
If your wisdom teeth do arrive in a good position and you're able to keep them clean, you may not need to have them extracted. Dr. Gripentrog and Dr. Rogers will evaluate them and let you know if it would benefit you to have them removed.
Dental Injury or Infection
If your tooth becomes injured or infected and a root canal isn't able to preserve it, you may need to have that tooth removed. A dental infection won't go away on it's own, and if a root canal is not able to remove the infected tissue, you're at risk for that infection to travel to other critical areas of your body.
The good news is that our doctors can help guide you through a tooth extraction from start to finish. We even offer options for sedation dentistry for those patients who may need extra help feeling relaxed during their procedure. Your comfort is our top priority, and most patients are pleasantly surprised at how smoothly their extraction procedure can be.
